Session Descriptions

Mini Red

Mini tennis red is for players aged 5 to 8 years. The fundamentals of speed, balance and agility are taught in fun games based activities. At this stage the basic strokes of the game and how to score points is introduced.  The sessions are taught on small courts with low nets and soft balls and juniors use short rackets. It’s just like the real game and gives young juniors the opportunity to have long rallies and play different types of shots. Competitive play is encouraged at this early stage and all players are welcome to participate in internal competitive opportunities at Hartswood.

Mini Orange

Mini tennis orange is a great way for players to continue their progress from mini red and is for players aged 8 - 9 years old. It is played with slightly longer rackets then those used at red level and orange soft balls are used. The courts are bigger and wider than at the red stage but still smaller than full-size tennis courts allowing juniors to develop a sense of the ‘real’ game. It is the stage before playing on a full sized court and helps players prepare and develop different shots and tactics in anticipation of full court tennis. The technical aspects of the strokes are reinforced and practice is highly recommended. Tie break scoring system is taught as matches are played in tie break format. Speed, balance and agility are now taught at a more challenging level but the emphasis is always to have fun.

Mini Green

Mini green is for juniors aged 9-10 years of age. Play is now on a full sized court but still with soft balls although these are now green and are heavier than the orange ball. Juniors are taught the tennis scoring system and match-play is emphasized. The focus is on learning the more advanced aspects of movement including speed, balance and agility while still having fun. Players should be willing to practice and play in ratings competitions.

Yellow Ball

The Yellow ball squad is for juniors aged 11 to 15 years. At this level juniors have developed the fundamentals of their strokes and will be taught the more advanced aspects of technical stroke production. Players will also begin the journey of exploring different styles of play with the aim of  discovering their own style. In this squad players continue to work on speed, balance and agility but are taught at a more advanced stage.
